What Is Godavari Pushkaralu?
Pushkaralu is a Hindu river festival celebrated once every 12 years, dedicated to one of India’s 12 sacred rivers. Each river takes its turn based on the position of Jupiter (Brihaspati) in the zodiac.
When Jupiter enters Simha Rasi (Leo), it’s the Godavari’s turn to be honoured. Devotees believe that bathing in the river during this window carries the merit of bathing in all 12 sacred rivers over 12 years – making it one of the most spiritually rewarding festivals in the Hindu calendar.
Because of its scale and devotion, the festival is often called South India’s Kumbh Mela.
When Is Godavari Pushkaralu 2027?
The festival runs for 12 days, from 26 June, 2027 to 7 July, 2027. These dates were confirmed by the Andhra Pradesh government through GO Rt No.1575 and an Extraordinary Gazette notification dated 12 December 2025.
A few days carry special significance:
- Day 1 (26 June) — Dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Brihaspati, marking the joyful start of the festival.
- Day 9 (4 July) — A day for Pitru Tarpanam, when families honour their ancestors.
- Day 12 (7 July) — The closing day, dedicated to Lord Rama, with the Anthya Snanam marking a beautiful end to the celebration.
Every one of the 12 days is considered auspicious, so however many days you can visit, your trip carries full blessings.
Where Does the Festival Take Place?
The main celebrations centre around Rajamahendravaram (Rajahmundry), home to well-loved ghats like Pushkar Ghat, Kotilingala Ghat, Saraswati Ghat, and Gowthami Ghat.
The festival also spreads across six districts along the river – Polavaram, Eluru, East Godavari, West Godavari, Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, and Kakinada – with over 500 ghats planned in total.
Beyond Andhra Pradesh, pilgrims also gather at sacred spots in Telangana, including Bhadrachalam, Basara, Dharmapuri, and Kaleshwaram, where nearly 74 ghats line the river.

Godavari Pushkaralu is more than a bathing ritual – it’s a celebration of family, faith, and gratitude. Pilgrims come to:
